California’s choice for whitewater rafting in 2026: The American River!
It is Earth Day, April 22nd, 2026 and the “Miracle April” of ongoing storms are filling the reservoirs on the South Fork to capacity. This will ensure excellent conditions for whitewater rafting all season long in 2026!
How do full reservoirs affect whitewater rafting on the South Fork of the American?
The South Fork river flows are dam controlled. Full reservoirs mean the decades of hard work by water agencies, and conservation groups like F.O.R. and Mother Lode, will pay off for boaters- big time! There will be consistent releases of water for whitewater rafting all season long on the South Fork of the American River- Guaranteed!
Will the river flows be fun and exciting on the South Fork in a low snow pack year?
There won’t be extreme high water in the Spring of 2026. Instead, there will be robust, exciting and fun flows all season long. Given the limited supply of snow pack runoff, the number of days that recreational flows of water will be available have been reduced. There will be no water on Wednesdays in 2026. However, if you are rafting on the other days of the week, the flow will be “normal”. That means, unless you are a guide, you are unlikely to notice a difference at all. The normal flows are designed to provide a fun, exciting and reliable whitewater rafting experience. Perfect for Class III whitewater boating!
Which parts of the South Fork of the American River should I choose?
It depends on the challenge, timing and duration of the trip you desire:
The Gorge Run begins gently at the Mother Lode Camp and builds into a crescendo of almost continuous Class III rapids in the Gorge, and finally ends in Folsom Lake. This more gentle beginning is great for first time rafters and allows your crew to get synchronized. The later start time is more convenient for out of town travelers and late risers.
The Chili Bar Run begins in the morning and jumps almost immediately into the half-mile long technical, Class III, Meat Grinder Rapid. It also includes the river’s most difficult rapid of all- the Class III+ Troublemaker Rapid! This run is recommended for rafters with previous experience and ends at the Mother Lode Camp. It is perfect for the second day of your two day river trip!
The Middle Reach Run from the Marshall Gold Park to Mother Lode Camp is an easy, comparatively short, Class II run that features swimming, floating, wildlife viewing and is great for families with small children as young as five years old.
Help us celebrate 50+ years!
Where did Mother Lode River Center begin?
It is hard to imagine that our company began its journey with one raft and a Volkswagen bus in the Summer of 1974- that was 52 years ago this season. There have been lots of changes along the way and if you are interested in how the company transformed itself into a place called Mother Lode River Center—read on here…..
So what is our spiritual North Star?
We are not only family owned and run, everyone at Mother Lode is a member of a tightly knit team with a single purpose –To run the safest, best organized and most fun river trips and to strive for the preservation of the rivers we cherish. That phrase is from our original brochure from over fifty years ago and these are some ways we show we mean it:
What does the “preservation of rivers” mean?
It means there are over 30,000 letters that Mother Lode participants have written in support of 15 of California’s most endangered rivers. It all began with the loss of the Stanislaus River to the New Melones Reservoir. Since then we have worked tirelessly to successfully defend the North, Middle and South Forks of the American, the Tuolumne, Merced, Kings, Kern, Mokelumne, Cache Creek, Sespe, Yuba, Eel, Klamath, Bear and McCloud Rivers over the last half-century. It is a proud legacy attributable to Friends of the River, the California river community, and the last but not least, the MaLode Letter Writing Heroes who have written more letters than all other rafting companies and FOR, combined.
We look forward to celebrating the fruits of those many hard fought battles with you again this season. We are determined to continue the struggle to protect these sacred places for future generations!
See you on the river,
Scott, Greg, Rebekah and the MaLode Crew
