What’s your favorite rapid and what makes it special?
One of my favorite sections of a river is Mule Creek Canyon on the Rogue River. On my first multi day trip, we had the most delightful floating lunch with friends and family, taking in waterfalls along the side, before entering this swirly section of water. In Mule Creek Canyon the river narrows and the walls lining the river canyon tower above you. No crazy drops or waves – but reminiscent of a uniquely serene experience, bald eagles and great blue herons, it was the culmination of making new friends, trying new skills, and an unforgettable spontaneous pineapple upside down cake cook off.
Why do you love working for Mother Lode?
When I started guiding commercially, connecting with Motherlode was a no brainer. It was a priority of mine to go to a company with a heartfelt mission not only about offering participants an awesome experience, but one that connects visitors with the opportunity to learn the history of California rivers, wonder about the future, and take action. Now, it’s returning to a community that cheers you on and celebrates one another in their progression, creates opportunities together, and puts the group first – plus one of the most stunning camps on the river.
What’s one of your favorite adventures?
Getting to know the magical river Ma Ganga outside Rishikesh, India! Years ago the South Fork American brought me close to a woman who this season instigated and implemented the first women’s guide school in India. After she wrapped up there, it was an absolute treasure meeting some of the women from the experience, Nari Nauka, then exploring the city of Rishikesh, cattle lining the streets, a river side ceremony and dance party, trekking through the Himalaya to the highest Shiva temple, and finally rowing Ma Ganga. With a touch of yoga every morning and Ayurveda all day long, the mountains towered around us every day and rhododendrons painted our way. Our three day river trip was serene the first two days after we shoved off from a sacred confluence, taking in the turquoise water and consistent chai. The final day was met with epic waves and an abundance of boaters. We had the most patient and kind guides I’ve ever met. The learning was bountiful, I’d return with friends and family again and again. It was a special off season!
