I have many favorite rapids and I particularly enjoy those that give me an opportunity to catch some serious air- such as Hospital bar on the South Fork and the Tunnel Chute on the Middle Fork of the American.
Rivers provide a source of inspiration and joy for me, my family and so many others. Guiding river trips is one way I find of sharing my love of rivers with others and teaching aspiring guides is one of my favorite ways of connecting the dots between the generations. I enjoy working for Mother Lode for many reasons but an important one is that they are actively engaged in letter writing and other activism to advocate for river conservation. Our FOR (Friends of the River) letter writing talks have generated thousands of letters and helped save 15 California rivers- that is special! My reason for volunteering for both Friends of the River and MaLode is that both organizations pursue a common purpose I strongly support.
I also enjoy the opportunity that Mother Lode offers to expand my skill set beyond my role as a river guide. The MaLode Ropes Course, Zipline and Outdoor Education Programs all provide ways for folk to expand their personal comfort zones and learn about themselves as they learn to communicate and bond with others. Participating in Search and Rescue and my job as an IT expert are very satisfying. Nevertheless, I have found no better way to encounter meaningful challenge, enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors, and make new friends– than on a river!
