California Whitewater Guide School 2008
Where:
At our 12-acre riverside camp on the South Fork of the American River in Coloma, California.
What you can expect:
Our guide school is designed to teach its students how to become competent river guides. You can expect a collective sense of camaraderie, high times and fun. You should also prepare yourself for teamwork, tasks, challenges and schedules; all of which are inherent aspects of our guide school so as to emulate the demands of a commercial river trip.
What is taught?
Learn to "read" the river and negotiate a raft through whitewater, learn how to deliver a safety talk and understand the safety you are talking about, prepare equipment and meals, tie knots, and a variety of other skills. River ecosystems and local history are also emphasized. Our guide school is unique because its graduates complete and received certification for SwiftWater Rescue Technician - this certificate would cost you $230.00 if obtained on your own. SwiftWater Rescue is a requirement to work at most river companies. Mother Lode will provide rafting gear, which includes rafts, paddles, emergency equipment and lifejackets. We have hot showers, flush toilets and an outdoor commercial kitchen, where we will be preparing our meals together. Food is included in your tuition.
Who should come?
You! Although most of the students who have attended our school did so with the intent to become professional river guides, we've also had many who took the school to become better private boaters or because it was an inexpensive way to go rafting for six days straight.
